...AOL to join the 40+ companies that have committed to supporting the IETF proposed standard for the Instant Messaging Presence Protocol (IMPP)

Let me just pick one. CORBA. How come Microsoft never joined a whole bunch of other companies in supporting a standard?

Our goal with MSN Messenger client is to enable people to message with anyone regardless of their choice of client or backend system.

Is this along the lines of your goal involving Java? Because this almost rhymes with write once, run anywhere. Except, of course, that it should run on Windows better than anywhere else. That's going to be the bottom line with instant messenging too, isn't it.
