This doesn't help you with the Windows Explorer, but I like the Freeware Servant Salamander a lot better. It's an outstanding file manager.

Two panes, very customizable, and rock solid in my experience.

I'm running the beta 3 version 1.6, which includes a favorites feature (bottom of the drop down menu over the drive letter, or via a user-defined hot key).
