For me two things drew me into computers, one of them was Ted's book. Amazing that I even heard about this stuff in Israel while going through an Organic Chemistry M.Sc. program but there you are :)

P.S. The other thing was E.J.Corey's pioneering work at Harvard to use computers for planning organic syntheses. Prof Corey is one of my foremost examples of a true scientist, applying theory to experiment and experiment to theory. Prof Corey received the Nobel prize for Chemistry recently for this work.
