The only obscure way to get a persistent URL to a NY Times articles through their search engine is to look at the URL of any photographs in the article.

1. URL for the graphic in the article

http://graphics.nytimes.com/library/tech/99/08/biztech/articles/02link.1.jpg

2. Replace graphics with www and remove .1.jpg and add .html

http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/99/08/biztech/articles/02link.html

Eric Goetze: For this solution, I would guess 0.000001% users would go this far.

(FYI, I just went to my archives and found the article along with the unique URL).
