At the nonprofit I used to work for, the managers went to a conference for small magazine publishers. At a seminar the speaker asked how many people there had put their magazines full-text on the Web, and whether they'd seen their circulation go up or down. In every case, circulation went up.

Perhaps the Linux mags are afraid that "free as in beer" really is the key after all, and their entire target audience is composed of cheapskates.
