Is this "utilize a single namespace" requirement a big deal?

iirc, the original design put a version number (and a variant code) in the namespace name. sounds like a really great way to make sure that you can never ever update the standard without breaking all existing browsers...

(and yes, XHTML is simply an XML-encoding of HTML. pretty much what you get if you just make sure to include all optional tags in an existing HTML document).
