We're converting a site from being hosted on a Mac running WebSTAR to Linux running Apache.

The site has lots of RAW files that do redirects. We're converting the information in those files to .htaccess files for Apache.

The question: Is it better to have one huge .htaccess file at the top level of the site, or to take advantage of the hierarchy of folders and have smaller ones distributed thru the website?

How smart is Apache about reading these files? Does it look at mod dates?
