Well if you don't like WML you can still design for phones (and PDAs) in HTML using your favorite tools and use AvantGo as your conduit, since they will be supporting WAP (there is already non-WAP handheld wireless access from Palm and CE PDAs through devices from Minstrel and OpenSky; AvantGo's servers are based on HTTP).
