It kind of amazed me to see Dan Gillmor speak of bold as "exploring the new medium". John Dvorak used to do this in his paper columns, must've been a decade ago. I found it distracting then, too.

Sometimes Dan gets breathless over silly things! Boldface, imho, is not part of this medium. Follow that path, pretty soon the stuff that isn't boldface starts standing out. Further, if you're writing for serial reading, a boldface bit forces the eye to read ahead. When I write an essay I'm trying to lead you thru some process from beginning to end. I do like the bold sub-heads though, that comes from reading the NY Times as a kid and liking the voice that wrote those sub-heads (it seemed to be different from the voice that was writing the copy).
