The act of trying to open my Win frontier.root causes my Mac-based Frontier 6.1 to crash.

That's probably not a good idea. What I would do is export all the parts you added to the virgin Frontier.root and import them into the Frontier.root you're using on the Mac. The Batch Export submenu of Frontier's Main menu is quite useful for this kind of transition.
