--there have been a couple first novelistsWould you care to be more specific about these lucky few. The anecdotal evidence smells an awful lot like the equivalent of urban legend.
Some of the best books I've read were first novels. It would be a shame for the writers to not be compensated. The same goes for all the one-hit-wonder bands out there. They deserve compensation for a hit whether they've been around for years or not.
