What's even more wierd is that MapQuest is not a dot com that went out and licensed some mapping data and looked for a Web model. They made the switch. (AOL bought MapQuest in December 1999 for $1.1 billion)."They were sort of the groundbreakers in interactive mapping," said Paul Zagaeski, senior industry analyst for Giga Information Group, Cambridge, Mass. MapQuest answered the desires of users who were saying, "Forget it, people don't want online ordering of paper maps," and made a leap considered remarkable two years ago by offering on-the-spot clickable maps and directions, Zagaeski said.
