n the other hand, if you're talking about the GPL, specifically, somehow harming commercial developers or society in general, I doubt you'll find many people who believe that.

Why not? Stallman himself stated that the purpose of the GPL was to harm commercial developers, and it's doing it. As for hurting society: Depriving people of choice and establishing a monoculture is always destructive.
