Yeah, I guess I was ignoring that part. Especially in public forums, the implications of personal attacks are more complex than I outlined. A number 4 could be:

4) They want others to believe that I am imperfect. Whatever their motivation, it is time to start being very careful. They may have good motivations, but it rarely ends up being good for me personally. Having ourselves be defined by other people with suspect motives is very stressful.

I see now that number 4 is what you were talking about to begin with...
