I think that equating the power grid infrastructure with a monoculture is a misleading metaphor. I would put it on an even footing with sugars being used for storing solar energy in the earths biosphere.

Technologies that are part of the infrastructure, tend not to be proprietary, because infrastructure ownership is not something that competitors will easily tolerate.

So, while AC power is standardized, it is not proprietary.
