Be like Digital Creations, find other ways to profit off of your code.Playing devil's advocate here, why should they have to? If they choose to have a closed source business model, it is their intellectual property and they can do that. The market will determine whether or not this is feasible.
Don't expend any resources, then. Simply distribute your software with an open source license and ignore all outside contributions. Your users gain the benefits of source code access and you can go on developing the way you always have.
If only it were that easy. Read http://www.benews.com/story/?ID=1732 for Be's take on it. (NOTE: I am not trying to make parallels between Userland and Be, just point out their take on it.)
