Playing devil's advocate here, why should they have to? If they choose to have a closed source business model, it is their intellectual property and they can do that. The market will determine whether or not this is feasible.

They don't have to, they should want to because it is good for their users and creates a bigger, happier, smarter market for them to make money off of.

The Be article is contradictory. First it argues that BeOS is already really great so opening the source wouldn't improve it much. Then it says Be can't release the source because someone might come along and make something better out of it. If you can come up with a different revenue stream than selling software licenses then you have nothing to lose by opening your source.
