I don't know about .htaccess files (because I'm not an Apache guru), but you may want to look at mod_rewrite, a module for rewriting URLs before they're translated to filenames. The rules for manipulating URLs inside Apache are based on regular expressions and are kept in the central Apache configuration file.There's an excellent Users Guide which contains lots of examples for common cases.
