The life of an Apache request

I'd really like to have a "life of an Apache request" document that tells which files are read in which order, which files take precedence, how URLs are resolved, etc.

The Apache documentation is so general; they tell me what the syntax of every directive is, but they don't tell me which ones I should use in different situations.
