(My e-mail address is now eric.kidd@pobox.com.)A pike is a sharp, pointed hill.
A pike is also a long, pointed staff used by foot soldiers against cavalry. To make a pike: chop down a small tree and make a nine foot pole. Sharpen it. To use a pike: Get together with a few score friends. Stick the butt of your pike in the ground and aim the pointy end at a charging horse. Messy but effective.
A pike is also a fish.
A piker is "a person regarded as petty or stingy".
Cheers,
Eric
