Now it makes more sense

According to news.com:
Apple won't create a parallel Mac universe with the gamut of sport scores, weather updates and chat rooms that established portals or ISPs provide. Instead, the company will offer select services that will show off its graphics technology or other features of the Mac operating system, according to Peter Lowe, director of Mac OS worldwide product marketing.http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-1516380.html?tag=st.ne.1002.tgif?st.ne.fd.gif.d
So, mac.com is marketing of the mac, but they want money back, instead of spending money.
