Actually, there are many applications for asynchronous RPC, particularly for batch processing. See the success of IBM's MQSeries and Microsoft's attempt to compete with their MSMQ.

Unfortunately SMTP does not have guaranteed delivery. MQSeries and MSMQ support that.
