After two years of time wasted trying to hammer out an agreement the IETF is trying to heat things up with a request for full blown proposals by June 15.

IMHO the IM area is one where a stronger Microsoft (or a stronger AOL, for that matter) would have brought us a defacto standard long ago, if it had been allowed to happen as driven by market forces alone.
