If media were serialized and authenticated on each use?Someone could simply grab the bits off the wire as they were coming in, and then reverse-engineer the authentication scheme.
Of course, if the size of a download were large enough, users might rather pay the studio for a license-to-download than keep copies on a hard drive or CD-R. Maybe AOL/TW should distribute digital music in a format that soaks up as much bandwidth as possible for the sake of providing a Superior Listening Experience, and then convince everyone to buy enough expensive stereo equipment to properly appreciate it.
