Actually, labels are not generally patrons, because it's too much of a business relationship. They sign an artist because of the profit potential, and will cut the artist loose if they're unprofitable for too long.

I, at least, think of a patron as being someone who pays the bills without expecting a financial return. They might expect an artistic return, in the form of commissioned works.
