Jacob Levy: Curiously, the RIAA claims to represent artists. Why then would it have to agree with (unnamed) artist groups to do this?

Actually, in an astonishing fit of honesty, Hillary Rosen admitted that the RIAA does not and never has represented the artists. This at least lent some internal consistency to the RIAA's actions.
