ESR and Apple's irrelevance

There is an article on MacWeek that discusses some of the current buzz aboiut Easel and frames it around a comment made by ESR about Apple being a doomed cause. Now I won't argue with the idae of Apple as a niche player but does the Linux community really take itself so seriously that it thinks itself as a viable alternative to Windows?
Or, more to the point, do people like ESR ever think that an app like Easel will make Linux user friendly enough that the OS makes it into the average user's home?
