it was a necessary skill to survive in a hostile environment when animals could eat you if you couldn't anticipate their motives. Unfortunately this evolutionary skill is out of date.

Inapplicable in a discussion forum, maybe. Police officers, inner city dwellers, and hikers in grizzly country might disagree that it's out of date. :)
