No, actualy the evidence is pretty much in the other direction. He has no deep interest in himself, (As evidenced that his wife pretty much made all the finacial decisions and he couldn't care less about money) his only 'kick' is people liking him. It's a symbiotic relationship. He's a bit like a weathercock, he points on the direction of the prevailing opinion.What that means is that the majority looks up to see him doing what they want, and overall that's maybe not such a bad thing.
Sometimes the majority has been in opposition to the hard left of his party (Like on welfare) and he followed the strong winds from the middle.
