Your cheapest DSL solution will give you 2x the bandwidth you have upstream, and about 5x downstream, if you were getting the best throughput possible out of your 56k modem. (which is somewhat unlikely)

For your application, symmetric connections would be good, but you're still better off with the dsl than with the 56k modem. If nothing else, it's a bandaid untill better bandwidth arrives.
