I have actually started using a small program called mswordview. It converts word documents to HTML and i then look at the text that way. http://skynet.csn.ul.ie/~caolanalso there was an article in last months Linux Journal re the same problem. The author used VNC loaded on their machine at home to view their desktop on their office NT box and so they just opened Exchange or whatever email package there and used it. (VNC at http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/ )
Use the tools appropriate to the task.
This is a lesson we are trying to make to people in our office. People do not need to go to MS/Word or Powerpoint they need access to files in the formats of those programs. If Microsoft do go to XML there may be a sudden change in the number of apps that make use of the data easily.
