I have a feeling it's all about the ads. If you could go straight from weblogs.com to the content, you wouldn't see the ads. (OTOH, you're not adding load to Slashdot's server. So I wonder whether the point of their ads is just to cover the costs or if they actually consider the "content" itself to be valuable.)
