If I comment out that line (pta^.posttime = mainResponder.calendar.getAddressDay (adrday)) the calendar now works, but all of my news entries now show the current date instead of the day that the news item was posted.

I am going to rewrite sampleNewsSite.staticpage.default - I will let you know when it's ready...
