Is there a chance to set a CSS style of the input-fields and layers in a way so that the switching between browsing/editing does not change size and form of the typeface

Not sure. My base is the 4.0 browsers, and don't know if you can set the style of input fields. Generally, I've not delved deeply in CSS.

If you use the arrow as a background image (in a table cell or in a layer) I think the browser will not interfere when dragging.

I'll investigate.
