Or 3-4 very fast systems that include fast Ethernet, etc. The $500 systems will probably wind up being $600 systems real fast (no network cards, rebates probably only on the first ;-)

Check out Compaq DS10 servers (Alpha - is Frontier Intel dependent on NT boxes?) NT, Linux, Unix, VMS bootable. Designed to be rack mounted. Street price of $3500. Touted to be the "fastest servers" around.

A lot depends on what you need to accomplish...but caring for 30 systems is still going to cost more than caring for 15...or 5.
