Since I have a (possibly irrational) suspicion of "generic" hardware, I'm going to mention HP:

(Although I don't have any experience with these.)

While more smaller machines probably have more total CPU power, the administration overhead could be pretty large. With fewer, larger systems you don't have to worry as much about load-balancing.
