IRC may be the model for AOL's instant messaging, but there's another, better, more user-friendly system in use in many university settings called Zephyr -- an offshoot of MIT's Project Athena.

Documentation on Zephyr, how it's used, etc. can be had from the MIT Athena distribution server at ftp://athena-dist.mit.edu/pub/ATHENA/zephyr/, in particular, detailed PostScript docs are at ftp://athena-dist.mit.edu/pub/ATHENA/zephyr/OLD/doc/.
