However, "... even if the developer or service provider has a license, but it doesn’t cover your use of the particular application you received, you should have a license from Unisys to use the LZW patent."

So you have to find out what kind of license the developer of your software has. Furthermore, what they say on this page only applies if you're not trying to make any money from your website. If you are, and your software developer's license isn't broad enough (and they don't say whether developer licenses authorize commercial use of the images), you are supposed to negotiate with Unisys, because $5000 per server might not be enough for them.

In what versions did the browsers start supporting PNGs?
