If you could encourage richer user profiles, then you could search the database. Gavin's profile doesn't use a company email address, and never mentions his employer at all.

If you're concerned about invading people's privacy, you could have a checkbox (default=unchecked) saying "it's OK to contact me if there's something I can do to help".
