Absolutely. The programmer writing code is often inventing, and the value of any invention is frequently not known in advance. Are you suggesting that the investment of a programmer's own time and resources is not valuable enough to warrant compensation unless the compensation is fixed in advance? That the risk and investment of speculative programming shouldn't be rewarded with potentially open-ended ROI? That sounds socialist.
