Dave,

Here are some things try:

1. Click View-->Show-->Personal Toolbar to turn off the Instant Messenger stuff

2. Click Edit-->Preferences-->Appearance-->Text only to change the Back, Forward, etc. buttons to text only

3. Click on Edit-->Preferences-->Navigator-->Smart Browsing and deselect "Enable 'What's releated'" to turn it off

I'm not sure about how to get rid of the bookmarks, though!
