And for the majority of listeners, for vast the majority of recordings, mp3 _is_ cd quality as well. (based on some informal tests of my own)

But surely the file format itself is irrelevent, there's no reason one couldn't make the music available in any number of formats. The point, and the one that has the RIAA in some sort of apoplectic spasm, is that music can flow from the artists to the audience, without need for the enormous overhead of record companies (in their current form.)
