I don't see them as being selfish. It's the only way to know if people are actually clicking on those links. And if they are, which links are the most popular.

It helps the publisher know what the readers are interested in.

Then, if there is money involved, say you run a banner ad, you're supposed to get paid 5 cents for each redirect. You're at their mercy. They may claim you sent them 1,000 visitors, when you actually sent them 100,000. How else will you know?

Some of the redirect implementations don't work very well. But if it's designed properly then it shouldn't be noticed.

The other thing too is that Scripting News is a sort of public beta for stuff the Userland people are developing. Things are going to break from time to time.
