You may be interested in two prior threads on this subject:

Walter Logeman (walter@psybernet.co.nz) started "Collab filtering at my.userland.com?" (http://discuss.userland.com/msgReader$12781) in November 1999; 26 responses.

Going back even further, Ian Beatty (beatty@phast.umass.edu) started a thread in December 1998 with a "Discussion Group Feature Request." My response, "MetaDiscuss: Wish List," (http://discuss.userland.com/msgReader$1344) called for collaborative filtering too.
