(dave, this fractal thing is, like, a 100 years old ;-)

Searching for "fractal" in the IBM patent database brings up thousands of hits. For an example, here's an early patent on using fractals for image compression:

"Briefly described, the present invention provides a solution to the problem of starting with an image, for example of a natural particular object or scene, finding a specific fractal to fit it, and representing the image in terms of the mathematics of iterated function systems."

The real problem with fractal compression is that it doesn't work, but that's another story ;-)
