The whole idea behind Napster, freenet, et al, is the free distribution of information.

That's not an accurate statement. The whole idea behind Napster is to quickly and easily offer and find music files for immediate download. The author has said as much in interviews. It's romantic to believe otherwise, but it's not accurate.
