The problem with text files isn't inherent in their being text, it's the way you're expected to access them. Given an easy interface for manipulating the data, the user needn't know or care how the data is stored.This is entirely true but I think that Linux has shown that what happens when programmers don't need to build an interface for the users to access the data then they tend not to provide them at all.
