Recognition by peers is just another Atlas Shrugged-like scam to get us to go for slavery.

It can be. But then almost anything can.

Point the disgust at the people that exploit this and not at the sentiment itself

Besides, the actual idea of working for free on group projects is about as far as you can get from Ayn Rand's sense of über-individuality as possible :-)
