The email client isn't just a better text editor. Email is also a push medium, that gives more live to a discussion then the more polite webbased interface.

One way to go is to keep the mailing list, but use Frontier (possibly in combination with a database like FileMaker) to make it searchable. Some people have made arrangements like this.

Serving PDFs out of Frontier works excellent (but beware that they can make your root size grow big). No extra arrangements has to be made - you import them to the odb and publish them like normal html pages.
