I think I see part of this point... it makes it easier to provide robust, dependable search capabilities that build indexes based on user-activity and other user prefs in addition to traditional e-mail "objects" like subject, to, from, time, & body.

Add to that the content scalability a server-centric architecture offers, and e-mail won't just be text anymore, either.
